On September 22, 1990, the 11th Asian Games officially opened in Beijing, China. The event marked the first major international sports competition hosted by the People's Republic of China and became an important moment in the country's growing engagement with the international community. The Olympic Council of Asia records that the Games continued until October 7, with athletes from 37 national Olympic committees participating.

Hosting the Asian Games required Beijing to undertake major preparations, including the construction and renovation of sports venues and supporting facilities. Chinese government records state that 33 sports venues were newly built or renovated, along with related infrastructure projects. The preparations represented a major construction programme at a time when China's economic reforms and opening up were still in their early stages.
