“Vertical village” Housing Project was Introduce in France

“Vertical village” Housing Project was Introduce in France

La Maison Radieuse, a major collective housing project designed by renowned architect Le Corbusier, was inaugurated in Rezé near Nantes, France. The building became the second major example of Le Corbusier’s Unité d’Habitation concept, following his earlier work in Marseille, and reflected a bold new vision for post war urban housing. It featured 294 residential units and introduced a modern approach to apartment living, where architecture was not limited to shelter but also aimed to shape community life, social interaction and healthier urban living conditions.

The project was designed as a “vertical village”, bringing together apartments, shared facilities, open space, natural light, ventilation and community functions within a single residential structure. Le Corbusier’s idea was to create a building that could work almost like a compact city, where residents could live with privacy while still remaining connected to a wider community. The design emphasized sunlight, air circulation, green surroundings and practical shared amenities, offering an alternative to overcrowded and poorly planned urban housing.

La Maison Radieuse also reflected the broader housing challenges faced by Europe after the Second World War, when cities needed large scale, affordable and organized residential solutions. Its structure, raised on pilotis and surrounded by open land, represented a modern planning philosophy that sought to balance density with quality of life. The inclusion of a rooftop school further strengthened the idea that housing should be linked with education, community services and daily social needs.

Today, La Maison Radieuse remains inhabited, and its rooftop school is still in operation. More than just a housing block, it continues to stand as a living example of modernist architecture, collective housing and real estate development shaped by social purpose. Its lasting relevance makes it an important milestone in the history of modern housing, urban planning and community focused residential design.
