Karachi’s Historic Sindh Assembly Building Became the First Seat of Pakistan’s Parliament

Karachi’s Historic Sindh Assembly Building Became the First Seat of Pakistan’s Parliament

Days before the creation of Pakistan, the country’s Constituent Assembly held its inaugural session at the Sindh Assembly Building in Karachi on August 10, 1947, transforming the landmark into the first parliamentary home of the new state۔

On August 10, 1947, the historic Sindh Assembly Building in Karachi acquired a unique place in Pakistan’s architectural and parliamentary history when it hosted the inaugural session of the country’s Constituent Assembly. The event transformed a provincial legislative building into the first parliamentary centre of the emerging state.

The foundation stone of the building had been laid on March 11, 1940, by Sir Lancelot Graham, then Governor of Sindh, and the building was formally inaugurated on March 4, 1943. When Karachi became the capital of Pakistan, the structure provided a ready institutional home for the new country’s legislature.

With the inaugural Constituent Assembly session on August 10, the building moved beyond its original provincial role and assumed national significance. It subsequently witnessed some of the most consequential constitutional developments in Pakistan’s early history.

The Objectives Resolution was later adopted at this venue, while Pakistan’s first Constitution was also adopted in Karachi in 1956 at the same Sindh Assembly Building. The structure therefore became closely associated with the formative years of Pakistan’s constitutional and parliamentary system.

From a real estate and built-heritage perspective, the event illustrates how the significance of a property can extend far beyond its physical structure or land value. Buildings that become settings for defining national events acquire historical, institutional and cultural value that can endure for generations.

August 10, 1947 therefore marked a defining moment in the history of the Sindh Assembly Building, when an important Karachi landmark became the first parliamentary home of Pakistan and an enduring symbol of the country’s constitutional beginnings.
