Istanbul's First Permanent Bridge Between Europe and Asia Opens to Traffic

The 1,560-metre Bosphorus Bridge transformed cross-continental connectivity and became a landmark in Turkey's urban infrastructure development

Istanbul's First Permanent Bridge Between Europe and Asia Opens to Traffic

On October 30, 1973, the Bosphorus Bridge officially opened to traffic in Istanbul, establishing the first permanent road connection between the European and Asian sides of the Turkish city. The landmark engineering project represented a major achievement in international bridge construction and marked a turning point in Istanbul's transportation and urban development history.

Originally named the Bosphorus Bridge and now officially known as the 15 July Martyrs Bridge, the structure spans the Bosphorus Strait, connecting two continents through a permanent highway crossing. The bridge measures approximately 1,560 metres in total length, with a main suspension span of 1,074 metres. Construction began in February 1970 and was completed in October 1973. The project was designed by British engineering consultants Freeman Fox & Partners, while British, German and Turkish companies participated in its construction.

The official inauguration took place on October 30, 1973, attended by Turkish President Fahri Korutürk and Prime Minister Naim Talu. The opening coincided with celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey. At the time of completion, the bridge ranked as the fourth-longest suspension bridge in the world. Its main towers rise approximately 165 metres, supporting a roadway originally designed with six traffic lanes. Before the bridge opened, road vehicles travelling between Istanbul's European and Asian districts depended heavily on ferry services across the Bosphorus Strait.

The new crossing significantly improved road connectivity and supported the integration of transportation networks on both sides of the city.

Over subsequent decades, Istanbul's population growth and increasing traffic demands led to the development of additional crossings. The second Bosphorus crossing, the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, opened in 1988, followed by the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge in 2016. Today, the original Bosphorus Bridge remains an internationally recognised engineering landmark and an important element of Istanbul's transportation infrastructure.
