On September 15, 1999, one of Karachi’s most celebrated heritage properties, the Mohatta Palace, opened its doors to the public as a museum, marking a new chapter in the life of a building that had already witnessed several important periods of Pakistan’s history.
The palace was built in 1927 as the seaside residence of Rai Bahadur Seth Shivratan Mohatta, a successful Marwari businessman and trader. Located in Clifton, then an affluent seaside neighbourhood of Karachi, the imposing residence was designed by architect Ahmed Hussein Agha.
The building is regarded as an outstanding example of Mughal Revival architecture. Its distinctive appearance was created using locally available yellow Gizri stone alongside pink Jodhpur stone, giving the palace the visual character that continues to make it one of Karachi’s most recognisable architectural landmarks.
The property’s role changed dramatically after the creation of Pakistan. In 1947, the Government of Pakistan acquired Mohatta Palace to accommodate the country’s first Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It subsequently became the residence of Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah, sister of Pakistan’s founder Quaid e Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
Another transformation began in 1995 when the property was acquired by a public trust with the objective of preserving the historic building and converting it into a museum. Following restoration work, the Mohatta Palace Museum formally opened to the public on September 15, 1999.
Its inaugural exhibition, “Treasures of the Talpurs: Collections from the Courts of Sindh,” brought together more than a hundred objects from private collections associated with the Talpur families, including arms, textiles, jewellery, coins, manuscripts and furniture.
Today, Mohatta Palace stands as an important example of heritage conservation and adaptive reuse in Pakistan ,a private luxury residence that evolved into a government building, a historic home and eventually a public cultural institution.
