Did the U.S. Really Destroy Iran’s Nuclear Program?
The recent U.S. attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities have sparked a global question: Has the United States truly obliterated Iran’s nuclear program? If these strikes succeeded in destroying the sites, the resulting radiation could contaminate the air, water, food, and marine life across Iran and neighboring countries, rendering the region uninhabitable. The catastrophic fallout from targeting nuclear sites raises a critical issue: Are world leaders fully aware of the devastating consequences of such actions? (Part 1)
Yet, for reasons I’ll explain, I remain convinced that the U.S. failed to destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities. My belief rests on two compelling reasons.
First, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the globally respected authority monitoring nuclear activities, has not confirmed any “complete destruction.” If Iran’s three major nuclear sites—Natanz, Fordow, and Bushehr—had been entirely demolished, the IAEA’s global sensors and reports would have detected it. The agency’s Director General, Rafael Grossi, has stated that while some surface buildings at Natanz sustained damage, the critical underground facilities remained intact. Similarly, four structures in Isfahan were affected, but no evidence of radiation leakage or environmental contamination emerged. Fordow, a heavily fortified site built inside a mountain, showed no signs of radioactive release. These details suggest the attacks were either superficial or targeted sites misidentified as nuclear facilities.
The second, and more significant, reason lies in the immediate aftermath of any major nuclear incident or attack. Radiation effects become detectable almost instantly.
A fundamental principle of nuclear physics is that once a nuclear reaction begins, it cannot be abruptly stopped. This chain reaction spreads rapidly, releasing energy uncontrollably. If an active nuclear reactor is struck, the impact extends far beyond the site, with radioactive fallout spreading through air, water, and soil. This is why nuclear facilities worldwide are considered highly sensitive and dangerous. Any attack on them triggers immediate, visible radiation effects.
These two points provide clear evidence that the attack was either limited in scope or possibly misdirected. Scientifically, it is indisputable that striking an active nuclear facility would inevitably release radiation. The presence of radioactive material would cause explosions to instantly contaminate the air, water, and soil. If no such effects have been observed, then President Trump’s claim that the U.S. destroyed Iran’s three nuclear centers is either a misunderstanding or an intentional exaggeration.
Had Iran’s facilities been completely destroyed, with active nuclear reactors or radioactive materials present, the fallout could be carried by winds affecting countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and the Gulf states. If winds shifted north or eastward, radiation could reach Central Asia, southern Russia, western China, or northwestern India. History offers a vivid precedent: the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine, where a nuclear accident impacted eastern Europe and western Europe, with radiation detected in Sweden, Germany, Italy, Italy, and even Britain itself. The United Nations’ 2006 Chernobyl Report confirms this.
Similarly, the 2011 Fukushima disaster in Japan, triggered by an earthquake and tsunami, damaged a nuclear facility, releasing radiation into the Pacific Ocean that reached North America’s west coast, as documented by the WHO and IAEA reports.
