In today’s digital world, one of the most powerful words is “Algorithm” and it traces its origin to a name from the Islamic Golden Age: Algorithmi


The term “Algorithm” is derived from the Latinized name of Al Khwarizmi, a pioneering Muslim scientist who was the first to lay down a systematic, step by step method of solving mathematical problems. What we now call algorithms, the foundation of modern computer science, were born from the principles he introduced more than a thousand years ago.


In today’s world of computing, software, artificial intelligence (AI), and augmented reality (AR), we often think of names like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Sam Altman. Each of these figures has shaped a distinct realm of the digital age.


Bill Gates revolutionized personal computing through Microsoft and the Windows operating system. Steve Jobs redefined user experience and mobile technology with Apple, the Mac, iPhone, and iOS. Larry Page and Sergey Brin created Google, the most widely used search engine powered by complex algorithms. Jeff Bezos turned Amazon from an online bookstore into the world’s largest e commerce and cloud platform. Elon Musk is pioneering the future through Tesla’s electric vehicles and SpaceX’s space exploration. Mark Zuckerberg transformed human connectivity through Facebook and is now pushing the boundaries of virtual reality through Meta. And Sam Altman, through ChatGPT, took AI from academic research labs and made it accessible to everyday users, turning artificial intelligence into a tool for the masses.


While these are the visionaries of today, their work stands on the shoulders of a mathematician from the ninth century, Al Khwarizmi, who codified logic and mathematics into repeatable procedural systems. That system, which he documented and refined, is what we call an algorithm today, the mother of all modern inventions.


If we call Gates, Jobs, and Altman the heroes of the digital age, then Al Khwarizmi was its architect, the force behind the curtain whose name Algorithmi became immortal in the language of science and technology.


Al Khwarizmi, full name Muhammad ibn Musa al Khwarizmi, was a brilliant mathematician, astronomer, and geographer during the Abbasid Caliphate. He worked at the famed Bayt al Hikma (House of Wisdom) in Baghdad, the world’s foremost research center at the time.


He authored some of the earliest and most influential works in mathematics, including his groundbreaking book Al Kitab al Mukhtasar fi Hisab al Jabr wal Muqabala, widely considered the first formal text on algebra. In fact, the very word “Algebra” is derived from this book’s title. Al Khwarizmi is often called the Father of Algebra, having introduced foundational concepts like the use of zero and positional numbering, concepts that underpin modern arithmetic.


About four centuries after his death, Al Khwarizmi’s works were translated into Latin in places like Spain (Al Andalus) and Sicily, where Muslim, Jewish, and Christian scholars worked collaboratively. In these translations, his name appeared as “Algoritmi,” and from that evolved the term “algorithm.” Today, the core of computer science, machine learning, and AI runs on this very concept.


By the time the Mongol invasion destroyed Baghdad in 1258, 408 years after Al Khwarizmi’s death, his works had already made their way into Europe and been preserved in Latin translations. Thus, while the libraries of the Islamic Golden Age were burned, his knowledge survived and went on to shape the intellectual and scientific rebirth of the West.


If one were to look for a modern day equivalent of the Bayt al Hikma, a center that merges science, translation, innovation, and the practical application of knowledge, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) would be a strong contender. Alongside it, institutions like Stanford University, Google DeepMind, and OpenAI continue to drive the intersection of human intellect, technology, and language. In many ways, the flame lit in Baghdad never died, it simply found new vessels.


In Pakistan today, where young people spend much of their time on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, these platforms can become powerful tools for reclaiming our scientific heritage. Yes, the West may have industrialized IT, but its roots are undeniably Muslim. And Al Khwarizmi deserves to be portrayed not just as a scholar, but as a superhero, a figure holding a pen in one hand, a computer in the other, and lines of code flowing from both.


Through motion graphics, social media reels, and creative storytelling, we can show how his algorithms changed the world. Universities, tech parks, and coding institutes should feature bold murals and wall art, reminding the youth that the West learned IT, but we invented it.


Collaborations with popular tech YouTubers and instructors can help amplify this message, not just with knowledge, but with emotion. It’s time for our youth to recognize they are not just consumers of information, but heirs to a legacy of innovation. And we are no longer content to lag behind. We are ready to lead again.
