A high-level meeting chaired by Sindh Minister for Local Government Syed Nasir Hussain Shah on Wednesday finalized the Karachi Special Road Rehabilitation Program under the Minister for Local Government’s initiative, focusing on the restoration and upgrading of major road infrastructure across the metropolis.
During the meeting, Murtaza Wahab, Mayor of Karachi, briefed participants on the completion of planning for the rehabilitation of 183 key roads falling under various Town Municipal Corporations (TMCs). He noted that these corridors function as critical traffic arteries and alternative routes, facilitating daily movement for thousands of commuters across the city.
The provincial minister directed the Municipal Commissioner to expedite administrative procedures and immediately initiate the tendering process to ensure the timely execution of the project. He emphasized that the program will play a significant role in revitalizing Karachi’s urban infrastructure and improving municipal services for residents.
Mayor Wahab further informed the meeting that solarisation of streetlights will be undertaken following the rehabilitation of the roads. The initiative will replicate the successful model implemented along Shahrah-e-Faisal, where solar-powered lighting has delivered positive outcomes in terms of energy efficiency, operational cost reduction, and improved road illumination.
The meeting was attended by senior officials, including Special Secretary Local Government Syed Azhar Shah, Municipal Commissioner Karachi Ibrar Jaffar, and Managing Director of Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation Ahmed Ali Siddiqui, along with other relevant stakeholders.
Officials stated that the initiative is expected to enhance road safety, strengthen urban connectivity, and support the city’s broader infrastructure modernization efforts.

The Karachi Municipal Corporation (KMC) has intensified measures for the safe disposal of industrial and medical waste while simultaneously advancing key urban development projects across the city. Mayor Karachi stated that all institutions, including hospitals and industries, are expected to comply with international safety standards in their waste management operations.
The Mayor directed that facilities lacking proper waste disposal arrangements should coordinate with KMC, which will deploy vehicles to collect waste directly from their premises. He emphasized that the government has already provided the necessary infrastructure for secure waste management, and all institutions must support the administration, as air, water, and environmental resources are shared public assets whose protection is a collective responsibility.
He warned that hospitals or factories failing to dispose of waste safely would face strict enforcement actions. In line with environmental initiatives, the TP-1 wastewater treatment plant has been reactivated, and the first phase of the 20 MGD pilot project has been successfully completed.
Additionally, the process of converting treated water for industrial use has been initiated, with TP-1 in Haroonabad slated for formal inauguration in the coming days.
The Mayor highlighted that development work is ongoing citywide without discrimination, with KMC delivering tangible results. A flyover in Cattle Colony has been completed, and construction on the Azeempura flyover continues under KMC supervision. The condition of Mewa Shah graveyard has also improved significantly, reflecting the administration’s commitment to urban renewal.
He reassured citizens that with one and a half years remaining in his term, the focus remains on public service rather than political gains. Criticizing opponents, the Mayor stated that the performance of various towns is visible and, despite unwarranted criticism or obstacles, efforts for Karachi’s development and citizen welfare will continue unabated.

The Karachi Traffic Police on Monday closed several key roads across the city’s West and South districts as part of enhanced security arrangements in response to the prevailing security situation.
According to traffic authorities, the closures were implemented to facilitate security deployments and ensure public safety in sensitive areas. Officials stated that traffic diversions had been introduced to minimise disruption to daily commuting and maintain the flow of vehicles across major corridors.
The Traffic Police advised commuters to use designated alternative routes and follow updated traffic advisories issued through official communication channels. Additional personnel were deployed at key intersections to assist motorists and manage congestion during peak hours.
Civic authorities emphasised that such precautionary measures are aimed at safeguarding residents while ensuring continuity of essential urban movement, including access to workplaces, educational institutions, and commercial centres.
Residents and commuters were urged to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and plan travel schedules to avoid inconvenience until normal traffic operations are restored.
