The Sindh government has once again decided to reactivate the long delayed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Red Line project by handing over its execution to the Frontier Works Organization (FWO), setting a 90 day deadline for the completion of key components.
On the directives of Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, construction activity has resumed on previously stalled sections of the project, particularly along University Road. The provincial government has instructed that the mixed-traffic corridor and drainage system be completed within three months in order to reduce public inconvenience.
The decision came after the office of the previous contractor was sealed, prompting the government to transfer the project to FWO on an emergency basis. According to official sources, the move reflects administrative seriousness as well as growing public pressure, as the project has remained delayed for several years.
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has directed that construction work continue even during the Eid holidays to ensure that targets are met within the stipulated timeframe.
Government sources say that work on both sides of Lot II has been targeted for completion within 90 days, with priority being given to the most affected stretches.
Construction of water pipelines, service roads, and drainage infrastructure has been targeted for completion by the end of July. These areas have long been a major source of traffic congestion and public inconvenience.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab confirmed on the social media platform X that FWO has resumed work on University Road. He stated that the Chief Minister has clearly directed that the mixed traffic corridor and drainage works must be completed within 90 days.
During a visit to the project site, the Chief Minister expressed regret over the delays and apologized to citizens for the prolonged inconvenience. He said that approximately 12 kilometers of mixed traffic lanes would be restored within three months, adding that resolving public hardship remains the government’s top priority.
He further announced that the tender for the main corridor of Lot II will be reissued. He added that discussions with the FWO leadership have been completed and full scale construction activities are expected to resume within the next two to three days.
The Red Line BRT project was launched in 2022 with an estimated cost of Rs77–80 billion; however, due to delays and various disputes, the cost has now exceeded Rs103 billion. Disagreements over funding and construction quality with the previous contractor had significantly slowed progress.
Over the past four years, the incomplete project has severely affected daily life in Karachi. The prolonged delays have drawn continuous criticism from citizens, while the project has frequently been mocked on social media for its slow progress and repeated disruptions.

The Sindh government has launched a digital system for the collection of taxes on property transfers, marking a significant step toward improving transparency, efficiency, and accountability in the province’s land administration framework. The initiative aims to replace the existing manual processes, which have long been criticised for delays and irregularities.
The system was formalised through agreements signed between the provincial government and three major financial institutions: Sindh Bank, National Bank of Pakistan, and Bank of Punjab. These agreements were executed in collaboration with the Board of Revenue Sindh, which will play a key role in implementing and managing the new system.
According to officials, the digital platform will integrate local government departments, the Board of Revenue, and participating banks into a unified online network. This integration will allow for the direct and real-time digital collection of stamp duties and other taxes associated with property transfers, significantly reducing the need for manual intervention.
Sindh’s Local Government Minister, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, stated that the initiative is designed to simplify procedures for citizens while ensuring faster and more transparent property transactions. He emphasised that digitisation would help eliminate loopholes in the existing system and enhance service delivery across the province.
Officials further noted that the platform will be linked with the Board of Revenue’s existing digital infrastructure, enabling real time processing, improved coordination among institutions, and better record management. This is expected to minimise fraud, curb under-the-table dealings, and bring greater accountability to property transactions.
The government described the initiative as part of its broader strategy to modernise public services and strengthen digital governance. The system is expected to be rolled out in the coming months following the completion of initial agreements and technical integration.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah on Tuesday presided over a high level meeting at the CM House to assess the progress of key road infrastructure projects being executed under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), while also setting priorities for the upcoming development cycle.
During the briefing, officials informed the chief minister that five major road projects, collectively valued at over PKR 140.9 billion, are currently in progress under a joint funding arrangement between the federal and provincial governments. These projects include the extension of the Sindh Coastal Highway, rehabilitation of the Rohri /Guddu Barrage road, dualisation of the Tando Allahyar/Tando Adam road, dualisation of the Mehran Highway (Nawabshah/Ranipur), and the upgradation of the Sanghar/Rohri (N 5) road.
Authorities reported that while some projects have achieved steady physical progress, others remain in tendering or initial execution stages. So far, PKR 17.94 billion has been released in the current fiscal year, with overall spending gradually picking up pace.
The chief minister directed all concerned departments to accelerate work and address bottlenecks delaying project timelines. He particularly emphasised the need for timely relocation of utility infrastructure—such as gas pipelines, electricity lines, and water channels which has been hindering progress in certain areas.
Murad Ali Shah made it clear that delays caused by administrative inefficiencies or technical issues would not be tolerated. He instructed departments to enhance coordination and ensure that all schemes are completed within stipulated timelines. Stressing the importance of quality, he said the projects must meet durable construction standards to deliver long term benefits.
Highlighting the strategic importance of road infrastructure, the chief minister noted that improved connectivity would enhance trade, reduce travel time, and support economic growth across agriculture, industry, and regional markets.
The meeting also reviewed proposals for the upcoming PSDP cycle (2026–27), which include new road initiatives aimed at further strengthening connectivity across upper and lower Sindh. Officials were directed to ensure strict monitoring of ongoing projects and the efficient utilisation of development funds to achieve tangible economic and social outcomes.
