About Umerkot District

Umerkot District, located in southeastern Sindh, Pakistan, borders India’s Rajasthan province and is part of Mirpurkhas Division, with Umerkot city serving as its headquarters. The district comprises four talukas: Umerkot, Kunri, Samaro, and Pithoro. It is historically significant as the birthplace of Mughal Emperor Akbar at Umerkot Fort and is known for its desert landscape, agriculture—especially chilies and crops—along with a rich blend of Sindhi and Rajput culture. While the district contributes to regional farming and cross-border heritage tourism, it also faces ongoing challenges related to water scarcity, infrastructure development, and socioeconomic uplift in rural desert communities.
